 Katarina Novakovic

Dr Katarina Novakovic's
World of Science

About me

I am an EPSRC Career Acceleration Fellow based at the School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials at the Newcastle University, UK.

My research aims at developing applications of the oscillatory chemical reactions as a stimulus of smart polymer gels.

The outcome of this research is expected to advance the development of biomimetic materials that would perform rhythmic motion under fixed conditions similar to the beating of the myocardium (e.g. artificial muscles, oscillatory drug release synchronised with cell cycles or human biorhythms, biomimetic robots that require autonomous motion etc.).

Oscillatory system to deliver drugs, The Engineer
"The biggest challenge, according to Novakovic, will be to gain a better understanding of how the reactions work. Only then, she added, will they be able to produce predictable results."
